Samples of innovative aluminium products manufactured using friction stir welding technology were presented by the Cheboksary enterprise Cespel at the 23rd International Specialised Exhibition "Equipment, Instruments and Tools for Metalworking Industry"(Metalloobrabotka-2023). This is the first time that Cespel (a member of the Aluminium Association) has participated in the exhibition, which is traditionally held at Expocentre - in previous years, representatives of the company from Chuvashia attended the forum as guests.

At its stand in pavilion 8.1 of Expocentre Fairgrounds, the leading manufacturer of friction stir welding (FSW) systems in Russia is demonstrating products for aluminium bridge construction. This is an orthotropic slab element and a 250 kg beam test piece for the first aluminium road bridge in Russia and Eastern Europe under construction. The Cespel exposition also features other products manufactured at the welding complexes of the Cheboksary plant. The company's specialists working at the stand are ready to provide advice on equipment selection and its key advantages.

Among the exhibits there are samples created by friction stir welding of sheets of aluminium alloys AMg5 and AMg6 of various thicknesses - from 10 to 30 mm. Here you can also see samples of products made of AD0 alloy tested for static tensile and bending. These samples show that the STP weld remains intact under load, while rupture occurs elsewhere - the weld is stronger than the base material.

Visitors to the stand can also familiarise themselves with the equipment and technologies used at Cespel. STP, laser welding, ring welding, PRANS technology, welded tools - all are available for detailed study.

An interesting exhibit is an aluminium plate with a hollow channel made by friction stir welding. This technology can be used in cooling radiators, batteries and other products. Previously, to obtain such channels required a set of operations: cutting, milling, welding. Thanks to the solution offered by Cespel, the product is made in one run: the metal sheet is placed in the machine and the STP equipment is started. Interestingly, the new technology was found by accident. When testing the equipment, the wrong mode was used and an unplanned channel was formed in the aluminium plate. We started to look into it and realised that the solution had good prospects. The development was tried again, a suitable mode was selected and patented.
