22.06.2023 - Aluminium Association

The Aluminium Association is taking part in the exhibition and conference "Small and Low-tonnage Shipbuilding in Russia" (SLS Russia 2023), which opened today. The Forum takes place from 22 to 23 June at the World Ocean Museum in Kaliningrad. The Aluminium Association acts as an information partner of SLS Russia 2023, participates in the exposition with a stand presenting materials on the use of aluminium solutions in modern shipbuilding, and holds a round table as part of the business programme of the conference.

Among the visitors and participants of SLS Russia are representatives of regional executive authorities, production enterprises of various profiles, including shipbuilders, suppliers for shipbuilding enterprises, equipment and facilities for water transport, scientific and educational organisations. On the margins of the forum experts will discuss topical issues of development of small tonnage and small-size shipbuilding in the country.

The first day of the conference will feature a round table discussion organised by the Aluminium Association entitled "Aluminium for Shipbuilding. Innovation and import substitution". Experts from leading companies and research centres of the aluminium industry will talk about technologies and alloys, including new ones used in shipbuilding, as well as about opportunities for the development of berthing infrastructure in Russia based on the use of aluminium resistant to aggressive environments. Presentations will be made by representatives of the Aluminium Association, ILMiT, Youth Design Bureau of N.E. N.E. MSTU. Bauman, KUMZ, Cheboksary-based Sespel, Avial, Ushakov Shipyards and others.

In Russia, aluminium is widely used in small-size, low-tonnage high-speed, innovative and passenger shipbuilding. Alloys 5083, 1561 and 1581 are used, with alloys 1561 and 1581 being used to produce SKR panels for the structures of the latest fast ships. Among the new projects of the Aluminium Association is the production of a small vessel made from the new alloy 1581. This alloy, which has 30% higher tensile strength and 60% higher yield strength compared to alloy 5083, allows for a significant reduction in boat weight, increased manoeuvrability and lower specific fuel consumption.

Aluminium also finds application in mooring systems. In addition to their attractive appearance and ease of use, aluminium pontoons have a long service life of more than 30 years. Russia has a great potential for the development of aluminium quay infrastructure, such as pontoon systems, connectors, fasteners, gangways and additional equipment.
