Aluminium Architecture of the residential area on the Moskva River embankment

Moscow continues to implement a large-scale programme for improving the embankments 246 kilometres long, including the Khimki Reservoir. One of the most ambitious projects relating to the programme is the construction of the unique Beregovoy residential district with an area of 32 hectares in the Western District of Moscow.

The project of the residential complex, developed by the architectural bureau KAMEN ARCHITECTS, is an architectural complex of three houses including 30 sections of 8 to 27 storeys height.

The architectural feature of the district will be an aluminium facade based on a modular system, the plane of which will change from one house to another due to the transparent and opaque surface of the module, resembling the river surface. This unusual 'river flow' effect is achieved thanks to a combination of aluminium and glass surfaces, reflecting the idea of flexibility and variability that underlies the concept of the residential complex's architecture. MasTTech, a member of the Aluminium Association, will be the producer of materials for modular aluminium structures. The surface area of the facades for the first project stage is 55,000 sq. metres: to cover such an area, MasTTech will supply 1,500 tonnes of aluminium extrusions and components. To complete the project, it will be required to produce facade modules with a total area of 150,000 sq. metres.

Thanks to the combination of high strength and lightness, energy efficiency, environmental friendliness, as well as the aesthetic properties of anodised aluminium sheets used on the module's opaque part, aluminium is the most effective material for design and construction of advanced facilities.

'Today, in this country, the aluminium content in residential buildings is 2.4 kilogrammes per sq. metre, and it is planned to increase it to 5 kilogrammes per sq. metre by 2023 and to 7.5 kilogrammes per sq. metre by 2025. The implementation of striking advanced projects that organically fit into the urban space and infrastructure will further stimulate the use of aluminium solutions in construction,' says Olga Ogorodnikova, Head of the Construction Sector of the Aluminium Association.
