About 300 projects were submitted to the Clockwork Orange 2023 28th International Student Packaging Design Competition, and some of them are aluminium-based. The competition promotes packaging design skills among students, and real-life applications, assists businesses in finding new concepts and contractors, and supports new majors at colleges and universities. The Clockwork Orange 2023 competition winners will be announced in late September to early October.
For the first time in the competition’s history, the Aluminium Association will award special prizes to the best aluminium-based projects. “This year, more students are interested in aluminium packaging. Specifically, we received a large number of aluminium can designs”, says Igor Smireny, Director/Editor-in-Chief of the Packaging magazine, Vice President of the National Confederation of Packers, and Chairperson of the Clockwork Orange 2023 Organising Committee.
Aluminium packaging, particularly aluminium beverage cans, is a global trend. Consumers appreciate its lightness and convenience, while marketers value its usability for consumer communication through its vibrant and recognisable design. More companies, from craft breweries to energy drink manufacturers and wineries, are starting to package their beverages in aluminium containers. Experts predict that by the end of 2024, the EAEU’s aluminium can production capacity will have increased by 25% compared to this year. It means an extra 2 billion cans per year.
“Looking at both domestic and global manufacturers, we see that they are increasingly choosing to deliver their beverages in aluminium cans. They are also taking their designs a step further by printing on the can end, using the entire can surface for consumer communication. Aluminium sealing lids unleashes more design options”, notes Natalia Kudenkova, Head of Consumer Goods, the Aluminium Association. According to the expert, the entries submitted for the Clockwork Orange competition are fine works following current marketing trends, such as minimalism, mimicking popular games, characters, or animals, and representing national identity.
