Moscow, 23 March. A seminar took place at the Aluminium Association regarding the promising activities being carried out at the Institute of Light Materials and Technologies (ILMiT) and the Science and Technology Cluster. Their focus is the development of materials based on aluminium and technology to process them. The institute was created by UC RUSAL in collaboration with NUST ‘MISIS’, with the support of the Aluminium Association.
During the seminar, participants emphasised that one of the basic projects for ILMiT will be the foundry technology for the automotive industry. Around 27%, or about 4.2 mln tonnes, of aluminium consumption comes from the transport sector, and by 2025, this number will increase to 35%, up to 5.5 mln tonnes. The increase in aluminium consumption in motor vehicles is possible by using new long-lasting alloys that will be developed by the Institute.
The Institute will particular focus on creating materials for aerospace technology with greater durability, and developing additive manufacturing technology with the creation of new materials, which will have greater durability, and heat-resistant compositions with working temperatures up to 300°С.
One of the topics discussed at the seminar was the creation of new aluminium material to produce boilers for tank cars, for transporting strong nitric acid. Another topic was the development of aluminium alloy that is easy to weld for production of semi-finished products for bridge construction. Those present at the meeting highlighted that ILMiT is not restricted by the activities specified, and can work on projects related to the current demands of the national economy.
“In the aluminium sector in Russia there is a serious lack of new products and technologies. To that end, all participants of the Aluminium Association support the creation of such an Institute. We are sure many issues can be resolved thanks to the Institute”, noted the Chair of the Aluminium Association, Valentin Trishchenko.
Leading representatives from various sectors took part in the seminar, including PAO OAK, PAO Vertolety Russia, PAO Tupolev, OAO IL from the aviation sector, OAO ORKK, PAO PKK Energy, NPO Lavochka from the aerospace sector. Also present were metallurgic companies UC RUSAL, AO Arkonik Russia, OAO TATPROF’, OOO UK AMP, higher educational establishments NUST ‘MISIS’, Bauman Moscow State Technical University, and leading companies from other sectors, AO TVEL, OAO VNIIZHT, ROSNANO, OOO VPK and many others.
