UC RUSAL (commercial code in Hong Kong Stock Exchange 486, in Euronext RUSAL/RUAL, in Moscow Exchange RUAL/RUALR), one of the leading global producers of aluminium, and NUST ‘MISIS’, leading Russian technological institute, are creating a new institute within the structure of the university, the Institute of Light Materials and Technologies (ILMiT)..
The Institute of Light Materials and Technologies will become the first site in Russia for collaboration between NUST ‘MISIS’, RUSAL and members of the Aluminium Association to carry out scientific research and development (NIORK) of modern technologies.
The main areas of focus at the Institute will be creating new materials for hi-tech sectors (aviation construction, shipbuilding, automotive industry), development of additive manufacturing technology and metal-matrix aluminium composites, as well as power sources based on aluminium (aluminium-ion batteries).
“Key areas for strategic development of NUST ‘MISIS’ are to strengthen mutual cooperation with business-societies. The incorporation of RUSAL is a long-standing partner of our university, with whom we have implemented projects to the sum of around RUB 850 mln only in the last two years. The creation of a collaborative institute is the next step in deepening our partnership. Combining the efforts of the university as a leader in scientific research on materials science and metallurgy, and industrial partner will allow us to considerably expand competencies in the field of crating new materials and technologies in the Russian market, as well as accelerating the commercialisation of the developments”, stated Rector of NUST ‘MISIS’, Alevtina Chernikova.
Within the Institute of Light Materials and Technologies, there are research departments, scientific-research sites, testing and certification centres. The Institute’s laboratories will be equipped using RUSAL and NUST ‘MISIS’ own funds. In addition, the possibility will be looked into of applying for government funding.
“Thanks to the joint scientific activities of RUSAL and NUST ‘MISIS’, competencies will be significantly expanded in the field of creating new materials and technologies, necessary for increasing shares of production with added value in the structure of the Russian economy”, noted Technical Director of RUSAL, Victor Mann.
Note:
RUSAL is currently undertaking scientific research work at the base of its own Engineering and Technology Centre (ITC) in Krasnoyarsk, as well as at the All-Russian Aluminium and Magnesium Institute (VAMI) in St Petersburg and SibVAMI in Irkutsk. RUSAL, besides NUST ‘MISIS’, is also collaborating with other leading Russian institutions: Moscow State University, Siberian Federal University and Irkutsk State Technical University.
