Scientific and Research Institute of the Cable Industry (NIIKP) was established in 1947 by the decision of the Council of Ministers of the USSR on the premises of the central research laboratory of the chief Administration of the Cable Industry.

As it evolved, the institute raised the level of research and development and engineering effort, was equipped with the necessary technological and testing equipment, established and strengthened relations both with domestic cable plants and leading foreign firms.

The Institute has extensive scientific and technical relations with leading global firms producing cable productions, cable materials and cable process equipment.

These contacts began to be formed in late 60s, and scientific and technical relations have now been established with the production facilities in more than 20 countries, including technologically leading countries such as the USA, Japan, England, Germany, France, Finland and others. VNIIKP takes an active part in the activity of international organisations, including IEC, CIGRE.

For the development of production and international cooperation, the institute was awarded the Gold Mercury International Award in 1980 and the Birmingham Torch International Award in 1996.
